Recently bought a '71 Camaro with an 800 cfm Performer carb with an electric asphyxiate. I've never owned a carb with an electrical choke so I demand some help understanding what it's doing. I approached it similar a mechanical asphyxiate, tapped the accelerator with the key off and car cold and expected the butterfly to close, only information technology didn't budge. Turned on the key and initially cypher then gradually it closed. Simply hither'due south the problem, usually when I start the car the asphyxiate and the fast idle cam are not engaging correct away. The car stumbles and nearly dies before the choke finally comes in and the idle stabilizes. And so, even stranger with in xx-xxx seconds the butterfly cracks open up to close total while the fast idle cam continues for ii-3 minutes. Is this normal? I cutting my teeth on Q-jet mechanical chokes that stay closed much longer and seemed to only be controlled past rotating the encompass on the choke housing.

What's the fob to adjusting/tuning the Edelbrock electric choke? How do I become the choke to engage correct abroad when I start the auto? How can I accommodate to go far continue the buttlerfly closed longer - I tried adjusting the choke housing comprehend to a richer setting and information technology had no effect. Am I missing something cardinal hither?

Something is messed up there. I haven't worked on an Edelbrock electric choke, but I have worked with the Qjet ones.
The Qjet chokes close fully when the asphyxiate temperature drops to or beneath lxx degrees. In that location is no ability to the choke element with the ignition switch off, but when you turn on the ignition, 12 volts is applied to the coil, which will slowly open the choke while the engine warms upwards.
The choke should shut on a cold engine if the temp is at or below 70 degrees if you tap the gas pedal to release information technology.

So I checked this weekend and I have 12V at the asphyxiate housing, simply the butterfly is still opening erratically. I think the asphyxiate linkage may exist binding for some reason. Everything looks good visually, I even pulled the comprehend off the choke housing to make sure the bound was properly engaging the choke lever. Its all lined upwards correctly, but still just works occasionally. Tried playing with the accelerator linkage and even with a full throttle depression the buttlefly didn't close fifty-fifty though the automobile was stone common cold. Then when I played with the loftier idle linkage it finally clicked and the buttlerfly snapped shut. Then here's my question, does the choke linkage require lubrication of some kind? The carb is most 5-6 years old, but looks very make clean. Not sure if its ever been rebuilt, non that I want to exercise a full rebuild if its not necessary. Is there an easy fashion to lube the asphyxiate linkage without pulling off the carb and tearing it downwardly? Anyone else solved something like this earlier? Any advice is appreciated.

the asphyxiate assembly dont need lube. you tin get a new choke for relativly cheap and it aint bad to replace . Iffin i member right its 2 or 3 screws

The linkages do need lubriacting. You can exercise it with minimal teardown, with the carb however on the machine.

From retentivity in that location was a bolt on the end of the main cantankerous shaft(choke side) that allows y'all to remove all the linkages. Lubricate the joints and re-gather - 10 minute job.

Thanks Jamie...Is the bolt exposed (in plain view) or behind the asphyxiate housing? Anotherwords do I need to open or remove the choke housing to get to this bolt? If I remove information technology with the carb nevertheless on the machine are you lot sure no loose parts will end up in the intake? Just want to be condom...

Finally removed the choke linkage and lubricated and reinstalled. Did it correct on the machine, pretty straight forward. Just thing to watch out for is when removing the small screw that connects the butterfly to the choke rod, be careful not to drop it into the carb. I unfortunately did simply that and a 10 infinitesimal job turned into 3 times longer. Advise using a magnetic screwdriver and stuff a rag into the carb openings to avoid an uplanned detour. Choke seems to be operating properly now. Cheers to all for the good advice and particularly the pictures.
